AleOli y Tu
The Story
Frankwell is not where most visitors to Shrewsbury go looking for a great meal. That is precisely why AleOli y Tu has the following it does. The restaurant sits at 167 Frankwell, a short walk from the Welsh Bridge, and has been earning its Travellers' Choice award through consistency rather than profile.
The name is a play on alioli — the Spanish garlic sauce that anchors so much of the cooking — and the Spanish "y tú", meaning "and you." It is a small, personal place. The menu covers classic Spanish tapas: patatas bravas, chorizo, garlic mushrooms, fresh seafood. The portions are generous and the cooking is careful. Dog-friendly throughout.
The restaurant opens Tuesday to Friday from five in the evening, and on Saturdays from half past twelve. Closed Sunday and Monday. Booking ahead is strongly advised — tables here are taken seriously by people who know the town well.
Ranked fourth in Shrewsbury on TripAdvisor, AleOli y Tu has built that reputation entirely on the food and the people behind it. The tapas are made properly — not simplified for a British palate. We have not found a table here that did not lead to a second visit.

Cross the Welsh Bridge heading west from the old town and Frankwell is directly ahead. Number 167 is a short walk from the bridge, on the right. From The Square it is a fifteen-minute walk through Mardol and over the bridge.
Order more than you think you need — the portions encourage sharing and the menu rewards it. The patatas bravas, chorizo dishes and fresh seafood tapas are the most consistently praised. Ask the staff what is freshest on the night.
The Armoury at Victoria Quay is ten minutes on foot along the river — one of the best pubs in Shrewsbury for a post-dinner drink in a riverside setting. Alternatively the walk back across the Welsh Bridge with the old town lit up ahead is worth taking slowly.
