The Story
The building on Frankwell was the Olde Bucks Head before it became Yak & Yeti. The refurbishment that opened in 2024 was done properly — a serious Asian fusion kitchen on the ground floor, a full bar alongside it, and seven rooms above for those who want to stay. The menu draws on Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese cooking, with handmade dumplings that have become the dish most guests come back for.
Frankwell sits just across the Welsh Bridge from the old town, on the western bank of the Severn. It is a working part of Shrewsbury rather than a tourist one, which is part of why the restaurant feels like a discovery rather than an obvious destination. The Armoury pub is a short walk along the river. The town centre is ten minutes on foot across the bridge.
The handmade dumplings alone are worth the walk across the Welsh Bridge. The menu crosses Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese cooking in a beautifully refurbished building that does not feel like anywhere else in Shrewsbury. A TripAdvisor score of 4.6 from over 150 reviews tells you the standard is consistent.

Cross the Welsh Bridge heading west and Frankwell is directly ahead. Number 53 is on the left, about three minutes' walk from the bridge. From The Square it is a fifteen-minute walk through Mardol and over the bridge.
The handmade dumplings are the most talked-about dish and worth ordering regardless of what else you choose. The Nepalese-inspired curries and the bar's own cocktail list are both worth attention.
The Armoury at Victoria Quay is a ten-minute walk along the river — one of the best pubs in Shrewsbury for a post-dinner drink. Alternatively the bar at Yak & Yeti is open late and worth staying in.
