The Walrus
The Story
Lower Claremont Bank is a short street running off the market area, close to The Square but quiet enough to feel removed from it. The Walrus opened here under chef-owners Ben and Carla, and within a relatively short time had earned a place in both the MICHELIN Guide and the Good Food Guide — a combination that very few restaurants in Shropshire can claim.
The cooking is rooted in seasonal British produce with French techniques applied with enough confidence to make them feel natural rather than studied. The ground floor has an open kitchen, so the work is visible. The tasting menu format means the kitchen controls the pace of the meal, which suits the food.
Saturday dinner books out. If you want a table at the weekend, plan ahead rather than assuming availability. Weekday bookings are more accessible and no less worthwhile.
MICHELIN Guide listed, Good Food Guide listed and ranked in the top five restaurants in Shrewsbury. Ben and Carla run the kitchen themselves, which shows. Saturday dinner is on a waiting list. These are not things that happen to average restaurants.
Enjoy Your Visit
Saturday dinner is frequently fully booked. Reserve as far in advance as possible via the-walrus.co.uk. Weekday evenings are more accessible. The restaurant is small, which is part of why the atmosphere works — and why walk-ins are rarely possible.
Lower Claremont Bank runs off the market area, a three-minute walk from The Square. Head past the Market Hall on Claremont Street and turn left. The restaurant is on the right-hand side, ground floor and first floor.
Sit downstairs if you want to watch the kitchen work. The open pass gives a clear view of Ben and Carla in service. The tasting menu is the right way to eat here — it shows the cooking at its best and lets the kitchen set the pace.
The Square is a few minutes on foot. The Loggerheads on Church Street is the natural choice for a drink after dinner if you want somewhere with genuine character rather than a hotel bar.
