The Wheatsheaf

50 High Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1ST

The Story

The Wheatsheaf occupies a half-timbered building on the High Street, the main shopping street running through the centre of Shrewsbury. The building is old enough to look as though it belongs there — three bar areas inside, walls covered in photographs and prints of old Shrewsbury, the kind of interior that accumulates rather than gets designed.

The kitchen takes the food seriously for a pub on a shopping street. Freshly prepared from local produce, with a specials board that changes and a Sunday roast that earns consistent praise. Around 35 wines sit alongside the real ales — more range than most pubs of this type bother with. Live music runs on selected evenings. Outdoor seating when the weather allows. Dog-friendly throughout.

A half-timbered pub on the High Street with an award-winning chef, real ales and around 35 wines, live music and three bar areas that each have their own character. The Wheatsheaf does more than a High Street pub needs to, which is why it outlasts most of them.

Getting here

The Wheatsheaf is at number 50 on the High Street, the main shopping thoroughfare connecting Pride Hill to the town centre. Two minutes on foot from The Square, directly on the route between the market and the old town.

Food

The kitchen uses local produce and prepares food to order. The specials board changes regularly and the Sunday roast is one of the more consistently recommended in the town centre. Worth booking a table for Sunday lunch rather than arriving and hoping.

Ales and wine

Real ales on handpump alongside around 35 wines — a wider range than most pubs on the High Street offer. The ale selection changes and the staff know what is on. Worth asking before ordering.

Live music

The Wheatsheaf hosts live music on selected evenings throughout the year, covering folk, acoustic and other formats. Check the pub's social media or website before visiting if that is part of the plan.
