The Nag's Head

22 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, SY1 1XB

The Story

Wyle Cop has been one of Shrewsbury's main streets since the medieval period, the route down from the old town to the English Bridge. The Nag's Head has been on it since well before 1780, when records confirm it was already an established pub. The Grade II listed timber-framed building fits the street as naturally as anything on it.

Two things about the Nag's Head that most visitors don't find without being told. The beer garden behind the pub is unusually large for a town-centre location, and the wall at the far end is a surviving Tudor structure with original wattle and daub still intact. The pub also features on the Shrewsbury Ghost Trail, which reflects a reputation for unusual activity that goes back longer than the trail itself.

The pork pies are worth ordering at lunch. The ales are well-kept and the pace of the place is unhurried in a way that town-centre pubs rarely manage.

A timber-framed pub on Wyle Cop that has been here since before 1780. The beer garden behind is larger than anyone expects, with a Tudor wall at the back complete with original wattle and daub. The Nag's Head is the kind of pub that makes Wyle Cop what it is.

The beer garden

Go through to the back. The garden is larger than the front of the pub suggests and has a Tudor wall at the far end with original wattle and daub still visible. Worth seeing whether you are drinking outside or not.

Lunch

The pork pies are a regular recommendation from locals and reviewers alike. Arrive before one o'clock if you want one — they go. The ales are well-kept and the selection changes.

The Ghost Trail

The Nag's Head is one of the stops on the Shrewsbury Ghost Trail. The pub has a long-standing reputation for unexplained activity. Whether or not that interests you, it is part of what makes Wyle Cop the street it is.
