The Story
St Michael's Street runs behind Swan Hill, a quiet part of the old town that most visitors pass through without stopping. The Dolphin has been here since 1820, when it was built as a pub. Two hundred years of continuous use have given it the kind of character that new-build pubs spend decades trying to manufacture.
It is a Joule's Brewery taphouse, the same brewery behind Henry Tudor Inn on Barracks Passage. The range is reliable: Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and Green Monkey craft lager always on tap, with seasonal ales rotating alongside. No television. No background music. A wood burner in winter. A raised beer deck at the rear that catches the mid-afternoon sun in summer.
The FEAST kitchen runs on Thursday and Friday evenings and all day Saturday, bringing food into what is otherwise a drinking pub. Worth planning around if you want to eat as well as drink.

St Michael's Street runs off Swan Hill, towards the western edge of the old town. From The Square it is a ten-minute walk via Princess Street. Slightly off the main circuit, which is part of what makes it worth finding.
Joule's Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and Green Monkey are always on. Seasonal ales rotate alongside. The brewery is based in Market Drayton, about twenty miles from Shrewsbury. Ask what is on cask before ordering — the range rewards attention.
The raised deck at the rear of the pub catches the afternoon sun from mid-afternoon onwards. Worth heading out to in warm weather. The inside of the pub — oak floors, nooks, wood burner — is the better option in winter.
