The Boathouse
The Story
New Street runs along the inside of the river bend, on the western bank of the Severn just past the Welsh Bridge. The Boathouse has occupied this position long enough to have won Shropshire Pub of the Year six times, a record that reflects a period when the kitchen and the service matched the setting.
The location remains the pub's strongest asset. The terrace and beer garden sit directly above the river, with uninterrupted views across the water to the Quarry Park on the opposite bank. Rowing boats and the occasional Sabrina cruise pass below. On a clear day there is nowhere better to be outside in Shrewsbury.
The food is reliable rather than exceptional. Come for the riverside terrace, stay for a drink, and treat the food as a bonus rather than the main event.
The location is the reason to come. New Street sits on the western bank of the Severn, and the terrace looks directly across the river to the Quarry Park. There are very few better places in Shrewsbury to sit outside with a drink on a summer afternoon.
Enjoy Your Visit
Cross the Welsh Bridge heading west and turn left onto New Street. The Boathouse is a two-minute walk from the bridge, on the right with the river directly behind it. From The Square it is a fifteen-minute walk or five minutes from Class Stays on Frankwell.
The outdoor terrace and beer garden are the reason most people come. Tables face the river and the Quarry Park on the opposite bank. Arrive early on warm weekend afternoons — the riverside tables fill quickly and there is no reservation system for the terrace.
Food is served throughout the day. The menu is straightforward pub food — reliable enough for lunch alongside a drink. The real ales change regularly and the range is decent. The setting does the rest of the work.
