The Story
Swan Hill is a short street off Princess Street in the western part of the old town, close enough to the main shopping streets to be convenient and far enough from them to attract a different kind of drinker. The Admiral Benbow is a free house, which means it is not tied to any brewery and can stock whatever it chooses.
What it has chosen is an unusually broad range for a pub this size. Up to six cask ales and seven ciders on at any one time, alongside a selection of Belgian and German bottled beers that goes well beyond what most pubs in Shrewsbury bother stocking. The bar staff know the range well and can steer you towards something worth trying.
The main bar is an L-shaped room with a small separate room to the rear that can be hired for private functions. The heated courtyard garden behind the pub is one of the better outdoor spaces in this part of town — worth using even in cooler months. Dogs are welcome in the garden but not inside the bar.
A free house with six ales, seven ciders and a Belgian and German bottle selection that most pubs in Shrewsbury would not attempt. The courtyard beer garden is heated. The bar staff know what they are selling. Worth seeking out if the beer list matters to you.

Swan Hill runs off Princess Street, a two-minute walk from The Square heading west. The Admiral Benbow is partway along on the right. Easy to find once you know it is there — less obvious if you are new to the area.
