Henry Tudor Inn

Barracks Passage, Shrewsbury, SY1 1XA

The Story

The building on Barracks Passage has been standing since 1429, when it was constructed as an oak-framed inn in the shadow of Shrewsbury Castle. Carbon dating confirmed the date. In 1485, Henry Tudor stayed here on his march from Wales towards the Battle of Bosworth, where he defeated Richard III and became Henry VII. The room where he slept is now a private dining room called Earl's Quarters.

The inn became a Joule's Brewery taphouse after a 2023 refurbishment that stripped back later additions and restored the building's original character. Joule's ales are brewed in Market Drayton, about twenty miles from Shrewsbury. The exposed oak frame, the flagstone floors and the low ceilings are not a design choice. They are what a building looks like after six hundred years of continuous use.

Six hundred years of continuous use on Barracks Passage, Joule's ale on the bar and a private dining room where a future king slept the night before one of the most significant battles in English history. The history here is not performed. It is simply present.

Getting here

Barracks Passage runs off Wyle Cop, one of Shrewsbury's most historic streets, just below the castle. The inn is set back from the main road — look for the passage entrance and follow it through. Two minutes on foot from the English Bridge, five from The Square.

The ales

Henry Tudor Inn is a Joule's Brewery taphouse. Joule's is brewed in Market Drayton, about twenty miles away, making it one of the more locally sourced bars in Shrewsbury. The range changes but the quality is consistent. Ask what is on cask before ordering.

The building

Worth taking a moment to look at the structure properly. The oak frame is original, exposed after the 2023 refurbishment. The building was carbon-dated to 1429. Earl's Quarters, the private dining room, is where Henry Tudor stayed in 1485 on his way to Bosworth.

Food and evenings

Food is served daily from midday. Live music runs on selected evenings — worth checking the inn's social media before you visit if that is part of the plan. Friday and Saturday nights run until midnight.
