Mytton and Mermaid

Atcham, Shrewsbury, SY5 6QG

The Story

Atcham is a small village on the River Severn, four miles east of Shrewsbury on the B4380. The Mytton and Mermaid has occupied its position on the riverbank long enough to have become one of the more established names in Shropshire hospitality. Brunning and Price, who also run The Armoury at Victoria Quay in Shrewsbury, operate it with the same approach: a building with genuine character, left largely intact, with food and ales that justify the journey.

The riverside setting is the first thing guests mention. Rooms with river views look out over the Severn and the meadows beyond. The restaurant runs food throughout the day to the standard that Brunning and Price maintain consistently across their sites. Dog-friendly throughout. Listed in the Good Hotel Guide.

Wroxeter Roman City — the fourth-largest city in Roman Britain — is about a mile further east down the road. Worth combining with an overnight stay if history is part of the reason you are in the area.

Brunning and Price, who run The Armoury in Shrewsbury, also run this one — which tells you most of what you need to know about the quality. A riverside location four miles from Shrewsbury, with rooms looking out over the Severn and Wroxeter Roman City a mile down the road.

Enjoy Your Stay

Getting here

Atcham is on the B4380, four miles east of Shrewsbury. A car is essential. The drive from the town centre takes about fifteen minutes. The inn is on the main road through the village, directly on the river.

The rooms

Ask for a riverside room when you book. The rooms overlooking the Severn are the ones worth having — the views across the water and the meadows beyond are genuinely good, particularly in the early morning before the road gets busy.

Food and drink

Brunning and Price run the food and bar to the same standard as The Armoury in Shrewsbury. The menu changes seasonally, the ales are well-kept and the quality is consistent. Arrive before noon at weekends if you want a table by the river without waiting.

Wroxeter Roman City

The remains of Viroconium — the fourth-largest city in Roman Britain — are about a mile east of the inn. An English Heritage site with the largest freestanding Roman ruin in England. Worth visiting on the afternoon of arrival or the morning before checkout.

Into Shrewsbury

The town centre is fifteen minutes by car. The B4380 road connects directly. Parking near the river in Shrewsbury and walking in from the English Bridge end is the most straightforward approach.
