Darwin's Townhouse

37 St Julian's Friars, Shrewsbury, SY1 1XL

The Story

St Julian's Friars is a quiet street that most visitors to Shrewsbury never find on their own. It runs behind Wyle Cop, parallel to the river, and the Georgian townhouse at number 37 has been operating as Darwin's Townhouse since its refurbishment. The building is Grade II* listed and dates to the late 18th century.

The name is a nod to Charles Darwin, who was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and attended Shrewsbury School before going on to upend the natural sciences. The town does not let you forget its most famous son, and the hotel wears the name without making too much of it.

Nineteen bedrooms, each individually appointed. Privately owned and family-run. The Good Hotel Guide has listed it, which is a reliable indicator of the kind of hospitality that earns loyalty rather than just bookings. St Julian's Friars car park is a few steps away and charges £4 for a full day.

Grade II* listed on a quiet street between the river and the old town. Nineteen rooms in a late 18th-century Georgian townhouse, family-run with the kind of attention that shows. The breakfast earns consistent praise and the location gives you the town without the noise.

Enjoy Your Stay

Morning

Breakfast at Darwin's Townhouse is one of the more consistently praised in Shrewsbury — wide choice including vegetarian and vegan options. Worth taking time over before heading out. The river is a five-minute walk from the front door.

Late morning

The English Bridge is five minutes on foot. Cross it and Shrewsbury Abbey is directly ahead on Abbey Foregate. Free to enter, nearly a thousand years old and one of the quieter things to do in the town on a weekday morning.

Afternoon

The town centre is a ten-minute walk up through the historic lanes. Wyle Cop runs directly from the hotel area into the heart of the old town, past some of the finest medieval buildings in Shrewsbury. The Bear Steps, the market and The Square are all reachable on foot without a map.

Evening

Wyle Cop has several good options within a short walk — the Lion + Pheasant restaurant is a few minutes away and worth booking ahead if you want to eat well. The Lion Hotel bar further up the hill is open to non-guests.
