Shrewsbury Market Hall
The Story
Shrewsbury has held a market since at least the medieval period. Richard I confirmed the town's trading rights in 1189, formalising a tradition that was already established. The covered Market Hall on Claremont Street is the permanent home of that history, housing over sixty independent traders under one roof.
The market has won the title of Britain's Favourite Market on multiple occasions, a recognition that reflects the traders rather than the building. Fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and fish, delicatessen, books, antiques and collectables, arts and crafts, street food: a mix that comes from decades of independent trading rather than a managed retail selection.
The outdoor market on The Square runs on additional days of the week, extending the range further. Claremont Street is a one-minute walk from The Square, which means the two are easy to take together.
Multiple Britain's Favourite Market wins. Over sixty independent traders, most of them regulars who have been here for years rather than seasonal pop-ups. Go before ten o'clock on a Thursday morning and it is a different place from the weekend visit.
Enjoy Your Visit
Claremont Street runs directly off The Square. The Market Hall entrance is on the left as you walk down from the Old Market Hall. One minute on foot from the centre of town, signposted from The Square.
Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Individual traders may vary — most are open from 8am or 8:30am. Arrive before ten o'clock for the best choice of fresh produce before it sells out.
Fresh produce, meat, poultry and fish, a deli counter, books and antiques, arts and crafts and street food options for lunch. The range across sixty-plus traders covers most things you would want from a town market. The independent character is genuine rather than curated.
Thursday is the fullest day of the week. The market is quieter on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and busier on Friday and Saturday. If you are visiting Shrewsbury mid-week, Thursday morning is the right call for the market.
The Market Hall runs occasional Late Night evening events with extended opening, street food and a different atmosphere from the daytime market. Check shrewsburymarkethall.co.uk for upcoming dates before your visit.
